v. 8Seeing a stūpa of [the Buddha] Kāśyapa, purifying my mind, at that time I placed the middle umbrella there on the stūpa.
v. 9(jetaasa ya sa)11(ṇe)[ṇa] [a]lasa aṇol[e]vaṇeṇa vi ⟨◦⟩ thuv[ami kṣatrar](oha)[ṇ](u) [a](ṇohodu suho baho ◦)12
v. 9By (bathing [the saṅgha] with a bath-house), anointing [the stūpa] with orpiment,
and placing an umbrella on the stūpa, (I have experienced great bliss).
v. 10[aya] parcimia jadi ladho mi maṇ[u]ṣu bhavu ◦ [śakarayakule](jadu)13 [bhra]da budhasa tadiṇo ◦
v. 10This is [my] last lifetime. I have attained a human birth. I was born in the royal
family of the Śākyas, [as] the brother of the Buddha, the Savior.
v. 11 asti mama kayaśpi mahapu(r)[u]ṣa[la]kṣaṇ[a](◦) + 14(tri)daśa ◦ aṇasia pariura aṇom[a]gha ◦
v. 11There are on my body the (thir)ty marks of a great being, no more, complete, no less.
v. 12[pra]sa[di]aṇaho a[gh](ro) (ṇidiṭhu)15sarvadarśiṇa ⟨◦⟩ sarvo vatu mama ragho prat(u mi ayalu su)16ho ◦
v. 12I was designated by the All-seeing One as the foremost of the charming. All of my
passion has been ejected. (I) have attained (permanent) bliss.”
v. 13 eva Ṇadu tada thero bhrad[a] budha[sa tadi](ṇo ◦) (śpaya karmu viagha)17ṣe aṇodatu mahasare ☸
v. 13Thus did the Elder Nanda, the brother of the Buddha, the Savior, then explain [his] karma himself on the great
lake Anavatapta.
v. 14“During the teaching of [the Buddha] Vipaśyin, I made a peaked building for the universal community in the capital city Bandhumatī.
v. 15 dhośehi prasavi sarva sastarita aha dade ◦ prasaṇacitu suma[ṇ](o) [aghaṣ](e)20[p](ra)[ṇi]si tada ◦
v. 15Having covered [its] entire floor with fine cloths, I gave [the building to the community].
Then, with a pure mind and joyous heart, I made a vow:
v. 16 araghae aha b[u]dho pravaja ya aha lahe ◦ (aṇutara ca)21ṇibaṇo aha phaṣea ṇibudi ◦
v. 16‘May I win the favor of the Buddha, and may I obtain ordination [from him]; (and)
may I reach the calming [which is] (supreme) nirvāṇa.’
v. 17 teṇa kuśala[mu]l[e]ṇa ◦ (ṇavadi ka)22p[a] sasari ◦ dev[ah]odu maṇośe ya kridapuñu viroyiṣu (◦)
v. 17By that root of merit, I was reborn for (ninety) eons as a god and a human. I was
glorious, having done good deeds.
v. 18(adida)23(ṇa)[va]di kapa [e]ku ya kapu otvari ◦ ṇa [j](aṇi bhumie)24(pada) ṇikṣivita kada iṇo ◦
v. 18Ninety eons (have passed), and one eon further. I do not (recall that my feet) ever
were set (upon the [bare] ground).
v. 19(aya parcimi)25a jadi ladhu mi maṇoṣu bhavu ◦ [capa]⟨e⟩[aghrasr](e)[ṭh](i)[sa] [ja](d)[u]26śpi eghaputrao ◦
v. 19 (This is [my] last) lifetime. I have attained human birth. I was born as the only
son of a master merchant in Campā.
v. 20 jadamatra ya me satu pi[d]u chada ma[ma]⟨aya ◦⟩27 dadamaho daraghasa viśadi kuḍi aṇomia ◦ 28
v. 20And when I had just been born, [my] father had this wish for me: ‘I [will] give to
the boy twenty crores, no less.’
v. 21 caduraghulu ya me lumu jad[u] padatal[e] rmidu ⟪◦⟫ [muta](ma)29l[u] suharṣi śpi ◦ sapatiparami ghadu ◦
v. 21And soft hair, four fingers long, grew on the sole[s] of [my] feet. Freed (from filth
[?]), I was very happy, and attained to the highest fortune.
v. 22 vi[r]i[va](ta)30ṇa aho aghro ṇidiṭhu sarvadarśiṇa ◦ sarvo vatu [mama ragh](o)31 [p](ra)[tu] mi ayalu suho ◦
v. 22I was designated by the All-seeing One as the foremost of the energetic. All of my
passion has been ejected; I have attained permanent bliss.
v. 23 taśpa ho [atva]ghame[ṇa] [ma](hatvo)32[abhi]ghakṣada ◦ sadharmu ghuruhatavu tava śpara (b)[u](dhaṇa)33 śaśaṇo ◦
v. 23Therefore, indeed, the true Dharma is to be revered by one who wishes well for himself,
who desires to attain (greatness). Remember, then, the teaching of the Buddhas.”
v. 24 eva ku rś⟨o⟩ṇo capeo bhikhu bu[dha]sa ṣa[vao](◦)3434 śpaya karmu viaghaṣe aṇodate mahasare ◯
v. 24Thus, indeed, did Śroṇa of Campā, a monk [and] an personal disciple of the Buddha, explain [his] karma himself on

3. The Recitation of Yaśas
§ 1.3
v. 25 aha [i]ṣi a35rañade ghramu peḍae odari ◦ istrikuṇavu adhrikṣ[e] udh[u]maü viṇi[lao ◦]36
v. 25“[When] I [was] a sage, I went down from the forest to a village for alms. I saw the
corpse of a woman, bloated [and] discolored.
v. 30Seeing the corpse outside [of myself], I compared it to my own body: ‘As is that [body],
so is this one; as is this one, so is that one: putrid within and filthy, entire[ly]
repulsive.’
v. 31 tada uṭ́haï aghami pra[kame] y[eṇa] arśamu ◦ ṇa bhuyo piḍu [vrayiś](e)44 ṇa ya bhujiśe bh[u]yaṇo ◦
v. 31Then I got up and went [away]; I proceeded [?] to [my] hermitage. No more did I go
for alms, nor did I eat [any] food.
v. 32 yada yaha puṇo ghramu prav[e]kṣe bhuyaṇath[i]45o ◦ dhriśpaṇa rua rayaṇia tam eva saña bha⟪vae⟫ ◦
v. 32And when I entered the village again, seeking food, [whenever] I saw seductive [female]
forms, I developed that same perception.
v. 33 sarvo aya roa[gha]da 46 yasa su kuṇavu tasa ◦ atepudi ayokṣa ca sarvam edu juho[śpi](da ◦)47
v. 33‘All this which consists of physical form is like that corpse, putrid within and filthy;
all of this is repulsive.’
v. 34 edam edu bhaveateṇa prata me viadaraghada ◦ bramavihara ca[tva]⟪[ra]⟫ [a](pra)48maña subhavida ◦
v. 34As I was developing this [thought] in this way, I attained freedom from passions.
I fully developed the four infinite sublime states.
v. 35When I died and passed from that [life], I was destined [to be born in] the Brahma-world.
Upon passing from the Brahma-world, I was born in the city of Vārāṇasī.
v. 36I was born as the only son in the house of a master merchant. [I was] wealthy, possessed
of great luxuries, handsome, well-situated, beloved, [and] charming to [my] relatives,
having attained to the highest fortune.
v. 37 divasu pariarita kṣip[u] śaïa akapa[e]52 lahom eva vioj̄ita adaśa [i]strie tada ◦
v. 37After enjoying pleasures by day, I lay in bed at night. Then [one night], awakening
suddenly, I saw the women. . .
v. 38… (who had put) a long drum, a lute, a small drum, [or] a kettle drum (under) [their]
head[s], their hair dishevelled, exposed, [fast] asleep, mumbling.
v. 39 tasa me purima hedu upaṭ́hita mahathia ◦ śpaśaṇasaña [aś](ua)55 asi ateuru mama ◦
v. 39Thus there arose for me [the result of] the prior cause, highly salutary: toward the
women’s quarter, I had the repulsive mental image of a cremation-ground.
v. 43(I spoke [?]) to him loudly one word which had many results: ‘I am afflicted,’ I said,
“endangered on all sides.’
v. 44 tada [armuda](ba)61yae alavita tasaghade ⟨◦⟩ ehi kumara ma bhaya [id](u)[t](e ṇiru)62vadhrodu ◦ imaśpi eva takṣaṇo viadaraghe bha[v](ida)[◦]
v. 44Then the tathāgata spoke with words of immortality: ‘Come, young man, do not fear!
This is your [place] without affliction.’ At that very moment [I] was caused to become
free from passion.
v. 45Throwing off [my] jeweled shoes, crossing to the [other] bank of the river, I approached
the compassionate Teacher, the one without a rival.
v. 46 tada karuṇio śaste tiṣidu me v[i]di65[tva]ṇa ◦ deśeṣi masuru dharmu cadusacapraghaśaṇo ◦
v. 46Then the compassionate Teacher, knowing that I was thirsty, proclaimed the sweet Dharma
which reveals the four (noble) truths.
v. 47[dh](r)[iṭh](adha)66rmu aha bhate prabaja vaïṣu muṇi ◦ prabaeṣi [k](ar)[u](nio)67 aṇoapae ghudamu ◦
v. 47Having seen the Dharma, O venerable ones, I spoke of [i.e., requested] ordination
to the sage. Out of mercy, the compassionate Gautama ordained me.
v. 48 tada radie vivase[ṇa] ugha[daśpi] d[iv](agha)68re ◦ asava kṣavida sarve śidihodo śpi ṇibudu ◦
v. 48Then, with the end of the night, when the sun had risen, all of my depravities were
cleansed; I was cooled and calmed.”
v. 49 eva ya[śo kh](u)69rdhimadu bhikhu b[u]dhasa ṣavao ◦ śpaï karmu viaghaṣe aṇo70datu mahasare ◦
v. 49Thus, indeed, did Yaśas, a monk [and] personal disciple of the Buddha, possessed of supernatural power, explain
[his] karma himself on the great lake Anavatapta.
4. The Recitation of Bharadvāja
§ 1.4
v. 507171 sreṭhiputre pure asi iśpare pitri{a}e dhaṇe ⟨◦⟩ pidara aṇora[kṣ](i)[ta]72ṇa ◦ madu micha pravatiṣu ◦
v. 50“In the past, I was the son of a merchant, master over my father’s wealth. While taking
care of my father, I behaved wrongly toward my mother.
v. 51 pida bhrada ya bhaïṇi ya dasa[krarma](ka)[ra]73vi ca ◦ aṇapaṇeṇa tarpeṣi madara paribhaṣiṣu ◦
v. 51[My] father and brother and sister, and also the slaves and servants—I satisfied [them]
with food and drink; [but] I insulted my mother.
v. 53Through that ripening of karma, I spent a long time in hells. Having once again returned
as a human, I [now] eat rocks for [my] food.
v. 54 taṣu taṣu jadiṣu baṭa bhuta baho mae ◦ jihitsehi s[uduh](i)78du sadu kalo karomaho ◦
v. 54In every lifetime, many rocks were eaten by me. I always die[d] in terrible pain from
pangs of hunger.
v. 55 eva jadiśada paca yatra yatra ua[va]ji79ṣu ◦ jihitsehi suduhidu sadu kalu karomaho ◦
v. 55Thus for five hundred lifetimes, wherever I was born, I always die[d] in terrible
pain from pangs of hunger.
v. 56 a[ya pa]rci[majadi]80 ladho mi maṇoṣu bhavu ◦ araghidu mi sabudhu śakasiho ṇarotamu [◦]81
v. 56This is [my] last lifetime. I have attained human birth. I have won the favor of the
Buddha, the lion of the Śākyas, the greatest of men.
v. 57 prabaja ya mae ladha śakasihasa śaśaṇe ◦ [a]rahapa [ca mi prat](u)82 baïhodu śpi ṣ(a)vao ◦
v. 57And I have obtained ordination in the religion of the lion of the Śākyas, and I have attained the status of arhat. I am self-controlled, a personal disciple
[of the Buddha].
v. 58 edaṇi rdhi mama bhate arahatasa tadiṇo ◦ 83 ghuhatare praviṭhasa [baṭa bheśa]ti bhuyaṇo ◦
v. 58[Even] now, O venerable ones, [although] I have supernatural power [and am] an arhat
[and] a savior, rocks will be [my] food when I have entered within [my] cave.
v. 59 su [ye]va mama avase bheśa84{śa}di maraṇatio ◦ parcimu karmavivaghu sarve jiṇa bhaviśadi [◦]85
v. 59And this shall be my abode until death. [Then] the final ripening of [my] karma will
all be used up.
v. 60 taśpi citu prasadesa pidu madu e satio ◦ vaṭ́hasa [sa]kacu ma ho 86 parce taviśasa ◦
v. 60Therefore purify [your] mind[s] toward [your] mother and father. Serve [them] respectfully,
lest you regret [it] later.”
v. 61 eva ku thero bharvayo bhikhu budhasa ṣavao [◦]87 śpaya karmu viaghaṣe aṇodate mahasare ☸
v. 61Thus, indeed, did the elder Bharadvāja, a monk and personal disciple of the Buddha, explain [his] karma himself on the great
lake Anavatapta.
5. The Recitation of Vāgīśa
§ 1.5
v. 628888 idi ekaṇava[di]me [ka]pe ṇabhiaṇami [dhr]oghadi ⟨◦⟩ deva yeva maṇośa [ya] [thu]89bu puyae saghadi ◦
v. 62“In [this] ninety-first eon since then [?], I do not recall [having had] a bad birth;
[as] a god and a human, [I have had only] good birth, because of worshipping at a
stūpa.
v. 63 ajaṇataa kuśalu añamañeṣu paśia ⟨◦⟩ vi[va]90śisa thubu ghatvaṇa ◦ saḱaro aghari tada ◦
v. 63And, without knowing the merit [of it], having watched [others doing it] one after
another, I went to the stūpa of [the Buddha] Vipaśyin [and] made homage to it then.
v. 64Joyful, I placed a garland, incense, and unguent of three kākiṇīs [value] on the stūpa.
[As a result,] I was not reborn into a bad birth.
v. 65 ṇa [h](i)[ci]92te prasaṇasa ap[i]⟨a⟩ bhu⟨di⟩ dhakṣiṇa ◦ tasaghade a sabudhe ye ya budhaṇa [ṣ](ave)93a ◦
v. 65For no gift is small [when given] by one who is pure in mind to an enlightened Tathāgata
and to those who are the personal disciples of the Buddhas.
v. 66 sae aha budhaghuṇa jaṇamaṇa tasaghade ◦ thuve kariśe saḱa[r]o [bh](o)94yo bh⟨e⟩śam arśehio ◦
v. 66If I had paid homage to the stūpa while knowing the Buddha-virtues in the Tathāgata,
I would have been all the more without a superior [?].
v. 67 taśpa preaṇamaṇeṇa śastarasa baho gh[u]ṇa ◦ thu[ve k](u)95rosa saḱaro tada [mu]kṣasa dhroghadi ◦
v. 67Therefore, by one who understands the many virtues of the Teacher—make homage at a
stūpa. Thereby you will escape bad birth.
v. 68I have been designated by the All-seeing One as the foremost of composers of verses,
learned, varied in speech, wise, inspired.
v. 69 taśpa [ho atva]97ghameṇa mahatvo abhighakṣadu sadhamu gh[u]rohatavu tada śpara b[u]dhaṇ(a)[śa]98śaṇo ◦
v. 69Therefore, indeed, the true Dharma is to be revered by one who wishes well for himself,
who desires to attain greatness. Remember, then, the teaching of the Buddhas.”
v. 71“In the past, (I was a) wealthy (master merchant) in Rājagṛha. During a famine, all the sages were being fed.
v. 72[matsa](riye)101ṇa oaṇadho cita cedemi pavia ◦ ku ṇo aya parvaïdu [sata bar](ṣa)102ṇa puṣae ◦ ediśe k⟪u⟫tare dhrohikṣe vatamaṇae ◦
v. 72Resentful because of stinginess, I had an evil thought: ‘Who in the world would feed
this mendicant for seven years, while such a wilderness[-like] famine is going on?’
v. 73 peavitaṇa bha[t](u)103 aśpamutreṇa kvachia ◦ ta bhikhu aśaveṣi su ya kalu a[k]roviṣu (◦)104
v. 73Having cooked rice by boiling [it] with horse’s urine, I fed it to the monk, and he
died.
v. 74Through the ripening of that karma, I spent a long time in hells. Then, through the
remainder of [that] karma, wherever I was born, I always die[d] in terrible pain from
pangs of hunger.
v. 75 e⟨v⟩a jadiśada paca yatra yatra uavajiṣu [◦]107 jihitsehi suduhidu sadu kalu karemaho ◦
v. 75Thus for five hundred lifetimes, wherever I was born, I always die[d] in terrible

v. 79Thus indeed did the elder Nandika, the companion of Anuruddha, explain [his] karma himself on the great Lake Anavatapta.
v. 83Seeing them [and] watching them one after another, I took the jasmine flower from
[my] ear [and] placed [it] on the stūpa myself.
v. 84(ṇa hi)119citu prasaṇasa a[pi]a bhud[i] dhakṣiṇa ◦ tasaghada a sabudha ye ya (b)[udh](a)120ṇa ṣave[a ◦]

v. 87Having donated [just] one flower, for a thousand crores of years I enjoyed pleasures
among the gods, [and] in the end [now comes] my calming [i.e., nirvāṇa].
v. 88This, O venerable ones, I remember: having donated [just] one flower, I experienced
its result; for karma does not disappear.”

Thus it was heard. In the city Pāṭaliputra, 163 a magician displayed
magic. 164 There are two kinds of magic: the magic of Śambara165 and the magic of Indra.
